“They called me the black sheep—but I was just tuning myself to a different frequency.”

Manipur, India

Uttam Kumar

It began with a black acoustic guitar—left behind by a friend of his brother—and a one-string version of Ek Do Teen. That one hour turned into three hours a day, and soon, a lifetime. With no internet and no support, he hunted down Xeroxed guitar magazines from Bangalore libraries and practiced in secret, skipping chemistry class for chords. In a family where music was frowned upon, he was the black sheep—choosing the path of rebellion and harmony all at once. At just 17, he ran away to Bangalore with nothing but a dream. Playing restaurant gigs by night and jazz with the army by day, he carved out a life that proved music wasn’t a hobby—it was a calling. From underground rock to music theory classrooms, his strings have strummed through every phase. And he’s still going strong.
